Policy In Practice

PolicyLab is a nonpartisan, service-learning initiative that gives undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to research real-world policy questions and to draft useful research for policymakers, issue advocates, and other change agents. Policymakers submit a question for a group of 3-4 students to research. The students conduct hours of in-depth research and then craft a policy memo that typically includes background information; insights from the scholarly literature; a sense of what other cities, states, or countries have done; and suggestions for how the policymaker might proceed.

Research As Service

PolicyLab gives students an opportunity to serve their community through research and commitment to answering policymakers’ questions. Using Duke University’s many research resources, students produce research that could help change the conversation and policies in a range of areas.

The North Carolina Lab for Policy Impact

The NC Lab for Policy Impact works to support state and local policy makers and issue advocates by providing valuable policy research conducted by a team of student leaders. It also helps to cultivate a network of emerging policy leaders who gain valuable knowledge, skills, and experiences that foster engaged citizenship.
Through intensive semester and summer programs, we guide college students interested in contributing to the civic landscape through research as they develop high-impact policy deliverables (e.g., research memos, infographics, and reports) to support North Carolina policymakers and non-profit organizations in need of research support. This non-partisan service-learning initiative gives students from across the state a unique opportunity to help shape the democratic landscape while also providing valuable support to public servants.
